Day Skipper Motor Combo: Combining the theory and practical aspects to complete the full Day Skipper
Day Skipper Motor Combo Training Course
At Aigua we believe the RYA Day Skipper Motor practical cruising course and navigation theory syllabus is the best in the world at this level, so we have developed an ‘Aigua Special’ and we call it our Day Skipper COMBO.
What is a Day Skipper Motor COMBO?
We have two options for our Motor Combo courses:
- Two days of navigation theory training (shorebased, in our classroom) on one weekend, followed by four days of practical motor boat training (onboard) subsequently finishing off with two days of navigation theory training (shorebased) on the second weekend, completing the Day Skipper/Watch Leader syllabus.
- Four days of navigation theory training (shorebased, in our classroom) during the week (Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday), with a weekend break, followed by four days of practical motor boat training (onboard) completing the Day Skipper/Watch Leader syllabus.
Why choose the ‘COMBO’?
To succeed and achieve the Day Skipper certificate, the RYA advises that candidates should have navigation theory knowledge to the level of Day Skipper, therefore this course provides that knowledge. The Combo also means putting your new skills into practice straight away and as a result it’s the ideal way to retain the knowledge and build upon your experience.
In order to satisfy the RYA guidelines of theory training time, you will study some of the theory subjects onboard, the ones where you can touch and practice with the equipment, for example the GPS section. We find this a great way to learn the skills of navigation in the classroom and certainly puts your new knowledge into practice.
You can also add the online VHF/DSC Marine Radio course to the programme as an addition. Adding the radio course makes your motor yacht cruising training adventure a nine-day feast of learning and new experiences and, most importantly, a lot of fun!
For professionals working within the yachting industry, both the shorebased theory certificate and practical licence are required to apply for commercial endorsement. A commercially endorsed Day Skipper certificate is required to work on board any commercial craft, subject the MCA’s codes of practice, up to 24m in length, operating in category 5 and 6 waters, to clarify that is up to 20 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight.

I very much enjoyed my classes at Aigua Sea School. Fred was a wonderful instructor – very patient and calm! I would definitely recommend it.
From an instructor’s point of view, Aigua offers unparalleled facilities but, more importantly, a very good support system which means we can offer great service to the students. When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Lovely friendly group of instructors at Aigua. We thoroughly enjoyed our Day Skipper Course. The boat was lovely, facilities great and they couldn’t have been more helpful from start to finish. If you are thinking of booking a sailing course, look no further.
