The speed and style of motor cruising
Day Skipper Motor Training Course
This is a great fun, and intensive, four-day practical course providing you with the skills you require to skipper a motor cruiser on short passages, by day and in familiar waters. The course syllabus includes pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. You will also experience the challenge of night hours training to navigate in the dark. This is not a residential course and the yacht will return to home berth at the end of each training day.
There are some wonderful training areas within Palma Bay and around the south west coast of Mallorca. You will cruise to the pretty anchorage of Portals Vells and view the Phoenician caves from 4000BC, navigate around the tricky little Isle de Sech, anchor in the clear waters of the Costa de la Calvia, train with mooring buoys in the marine nature reserve, and be challenged by navigation into, and berthing practice within, the bustling Palma harbour.
If you aim to achieve the Day Skipper certificate at the end of the course it is important that you are aware of the pre-requisite experience as stated by the RYA. The guidelines state that you should arrive to the course with navigation theory knowledge to the level of Day Skipper in order to achieve the title. This is why we present the option of the COMBO course: two days of theory before stepping onboard, finishing with two days of the theory at the end of the practical training. You should also step onboard having at least two days practical experience on a motor cruiser.
Without the theory knowledge, or pre-requisite experience at sea, it may jeopardise the award of the Day Skipper certificate. Please discuss your sailing experience, and navigation theory knowledge, with us prior to booking the course. We aim to ensure you are entirely happy about your expectations prior to stepping onboard. Following successful completion of the course you will be competent to skipper a motor cruiser in familiar waters by day. This practical course is ideal for recreational boaters to enjoy the freedom of chartering and/or owning their own motor cruisers, and also for professional mariners who are exploring the options of working on motor yachts. The training provides an excellent start to Yachtmaster preparation and the licence can be commercially endorsed.
For professional mariners, you must hold the Day Skipper shorebased theory certificate to enable you to apply for a commercial endorsement. With a commercially endorsed Day Skipper certificate, you can work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, subject to the MCA’s codes of practice, operating in category 5 and category 6 waters.
