Day Skipper Motor: the speed and style of motor cruising
Day Skipper Motor Training Course
This is a great fun, and intensive, four-day practical course providing you with the skills you require to skipper a motor cruiser on short passages, by day and in familiar waters. The course syllabus includes pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. You will also experience the challenge of night hours training to navigate in the dark. The Day Skipper Motor course is not a residential one, meaning the yacht will return to its home berth at the end of each training day.
There are some wonderful training areas within Palma Bay and around the south west coast of Mallorca. You will cruise to the pretty anchorage of Portals Vells and view the Phoenician caves from 4000BC, navigate around the tricky little Isle de Sech, anchor in the clear waters of the Costa de la Calvia, train with mooring buoys in the marine nature reserve as well as being challenged by navigation into, and berthing practice within, the bustling Palma harbour.
What do you need to do the Day Skipper Motor course?
You should step onboard having at least two days practical experience on a motor cruiser.
The guidelines state that you should also arrive to the course with navigation theory knowledge to the level of Day Skipper in order to achieve the title.
This is why we present the option of the COMBO or Online courses…
Day Skipper Motor Combo: two days of theory, four days of practical, finishing with two days of the theory or four days of theory followed by four days of practical training.
Day Skipper Theory Online: a fantastic online course provided by Skippers Online, learn in your own time from the comfort of your own home with 14 lessons and a guaranteed pass.
Without the theory knowledge, or pre-requisite experience at sea, it may jeopardise the award of the Day Skipper certificate. Please discuss your experience, and navigation theory knowledge, with us prior to booking the course. We aim to ensure you are entirely happy about your expectations prior to stepping onboard.
What does the course consist of?
- Duration: Four days, including a ‘night navigation’ day.
- Location: This course runs from our base in Mallorca.
- What’s included, what’s not: RYA Approved Training Vessel, including fuel used during training. Please bring packed lunches for the duration of the course. Meals and drinks onshore are not included and accommodation is not included.
What can you do after the course?
Following successful completion of the course you will be competent to skipper a motor cruiser (up to 24m LOA) in familiar waters by day.
This practical course is ideal for recreational boaters to enjoy the freedom of chartering and/or owning their own motor cruisers, and also for professional mariners who are exploring the options of working on motor yachts.
For Professional Mariners:
The training provides an excellent start to Yachtmaster preparation and the licence can be commercially endorsed.
You must hold the Day Skipper Shorebased theory certificate to enable you to apply for commercial endorsement.
With a commercially endorsed Day Skipper certificate, you can work on commercial vessels up to 24m in length, subject to the MCA’s codes of practice, operating in category 5 and category 6 waters.

I very much enjoyed my classes at Aigua Sea School. Fred was a wonderful instructor – very patient and calm! I would definitely recommend it.
From an instructor’s point of view, Aigua offers unparalleled facilities but, more importantly, a very good support system which means we can offer great service to the students. When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Lovely friendly group of instructors at Aigua. We thoroughly enjoyed our Day Skipper Course. The boat was lovely, facilities great and they couldn’t have been more helpful from start to finish. If you are thinking of booking a sailing course, look no further.
