Day Skipper Sail: develop your sailing skills for your own adventures
Day Skipper Sail Training Course
The RYA Day Skipper Sail training course helps to prepare you for your own sailing adventures. This time you are in charge! Each Day Skipper sailing course candidate will be tasked with being responsible for the boat, the crew, the navigation and the manoeuvres (having the support of a patient instructor keeping an eye on things!) for sessions during the week. It is a terrific course and great fun to teach.
Why sail with Aigua?
The coastal waters of Mallorca are stunning; white sandy anchorages, majestic mountain ranges, crystal clear waters, and what better way to explore them than by yacht, sailed there by you! You will drop anchor in secluded bays and navigate through islands, hop into harbours and pop into ports as you learn and develop your sailing skills. Later on in the week, when the crew are settled well into the yacht, you will join in with the night sail, preparing pilotage using buoyage and light houses to lead your way home.
We take car of your comfort too… At Aigua Sea School we consider the make-up of the crew, and cabin allocation, to ensure that everyone enjoys the privacy they prefer. Upon successful completion of the course you may be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
Theory Knowledge Needed
If you hope to achieve the Day Skipper certificate at the end of the course it is important that you are aware of the pre-requisite experience as stated by the RYA. The guidelines state that you should come to the course with navigation theory knowledge to the level of Day Skipper in order to achieve the title. You should also step onboard having already spent at least five days on a sailing yacht.
We have two options for obtaining the Day Skipper theory qualification, either online from the comfort of your own home with SkippersOnline or the COMBO course: two days of theory in the classroom before stepping onboard, finishing with two days of theory after the end of the practical sailing.
The Competent Crew and Day Skipper courses run together as the syllabus for both levels is similar. Without the theory knowledge, or pre-requisite experience at sea, it may be that you achieve the Competent Crew certificate from the course. Please discuss your sailing experience, and navigation theory knowledge with us prior to booking the course. We aim to ensure you are entirely happy about your expectations prior to stepping onboard.

Fantastic 2 weeks starting off with the theory week with Nathan and going onto the sailing practical week with the infamous “Johnny B”. Everything was very well organised from start to finish. We all had plenty of helm time to get comfortable handling a 40′ catamaran under power and sail. Both my wife and I…
This is a shout out to Johnny Breslin and the Aigua Sea School for an incredibly well organised and informative week on my RYA Day Skipper practical course. I was a rather late candidate but the team in the office did everything to make the transition on to the boat as smooth as possible. Once…
From an instructor’s point of view, Aigua offers unparalleled facilities but, more importantly, a very good support system which means we can offer great service to the students. When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Day Skipper was really a really cool course. where many sailing sailing techniques have been spent, with fully practical lessons on a super comfortable sailboat and sailing through wonderful places. It’s really worth taking a course with Aigua Sea School … very good.
