A fun two-day introduction to sailing – fancy giving it a go?
Start Yachting Course
The RYA ‘Start Yachting’ is a two-day introductory course where you can answer that question you’ve often asked yourself … “what’s it like to go sailing?”
You’ve seen the sun-drenched images of the yacht sailing away on the horizon, and always wondered, so here’s your way to find out!
Both days will start at a leisurely 09:30hrs and you’ll receive a safety briefing first. This will ensure you feel relaxed in the knowledge that your personal safety is of paramount to your instructor. Throw off the bowlines and set sail into Palma Bay for a morning of sailing techniques and understanding how the sails work with the wind.
Around lunchtime, you will drop the anchor over white sand in a sheltered anchorage to enjoy a Mediterranean style lunch onboard. Of course, you can take a swim should the waters be at a comfortable temperature, but please be sure to pack a beach towel.
After a relaxed lunch you’ll spend the afternoons sailing in the Bay of Palma. You don’t have to sleep onboard, so you can retire to your villa or hotel at the end of each day. You’ll do a little bit of everything, from rope work to helming and from hoisting sails to changing tack; it’s a great taster of what could potentially become the love of your life!

I was convinced that my objective in life was to live in a small cottage in the middle of northern Canada, hunting and growing all I would need to eat and essentially living at a very low cost. Now because of Aigua Sea School I have to add a massive chunk in order to sustain owning a sail boat as well!
It was a pleasure to do the Competent Crew course with them.
Going from only ever being a passenger on a boat, I now feel quite confident with my ability to be on a boat and be useful rather than just sitting down and getting burnt in the sun.
Nathan did a great job in instructing me and managed to stay very patient and understanding throughout the course.
So if you’re looking to get into yachting or working in the maritime industry, meeting Linda is as necessary as knowing how to swim.
Just completed my Day Skipper training with Aigua and Instructor Nathan Skinner. It was a fantastic week. I learnt a tremendous amount, both practical and theory. The Aigua team gave great customer service. I coudn’t have wished for a better instructor in Nathan. He gave 110%, great communicator and very professional. A very positive experience and would definitely go back for more training.
I recently did my day skipper course with them and I was very impressed! We learned a lot, I feel I really got everything out of the course I was looking for and it was good fun too. Special thanks to Nathan, you’re an awesome teacher! Kudos for your patience, positivity and the time you took to go the extra mile!!
I made it back to Hong Kong (with my plotter and all my luggage…) and have been relaxing (much needed) and reflecting back on those intense but very rewarding two weeks at Aigua.
It’s been a demanding pace and a lot of hard work indeed stepping up to your and RYA’s high standards (considering my starting point just a few decimal places above zero…), but I cannot thank you enough for having prepared me so well for both the theory and practical exams.
By the eve of the practical exam weekend, I was very pleased and satisfied with what I had learned. Regardless of the verdict from the RYA examiner, I just simply felt I was now a much better sailor and, more importantly, had gained a lot more confidence in doing so. Passing the practical exam was just the cherry on the sundae!
My only regret is not having had enough time to enjoy and visit Palma, which only means I shall be back some day.
In the meantime, all my thanks to you all, not only for your professionalism and dedication, but for being just great people.
I am glad that I have chosen Aigua Sea School, and shall definitely recommend it to everyone!
PS – Special thanks to John – please wish him all the best and a real nice time in Madagascar, and the best of luck in finding a properly draught pint of Guinness there!
