Radar: A mandatory part of a Yachtmaster examination
Radar Training Course
The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS) state that if you have a radar onboard you must know how to use it and let’s face it, in these days of technological advancements, most yachts will carry a radar system therefore you need to know how to use it! This one-day RYA Radar course will provide you with an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance.
Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all-seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for its limitations, or interpret its picture.
At Aigua Sea School we use the latest radar simulation equipment in our RYA Radar courses. Our training day will include topics such as:
- how the radar set actually works
- how its adjustments and features affect the way it works
- target definition
- radar reflectors
- types of radar display; radar plotting
- the use of radar in navigation and collision avoidance
We particularly recommend the RYA Radar Course to our Yachtmaster candidates as radar is increasingly becoming a mandatory part of a Yachtmaster examination. Yachtmaster candidates will be taught about the radar onboard their training vessel during the practical training week, however, the one day RYA Radar course gives you an in-depth understanding of radar.
All the Aigua training yachts have radar equipment onboard and, according to the IRPCS, you must know how to use it!
We’re hoping to be running RYA Radar courses regularly in 2019, so please keep an eye on our website and Facebook for more information.

Great new offices, perfect location and super helpful and knowledgeable staff!!! And Linda is always very friendly and keen to help out when she can. highly recommend this place!!!
I would highly recommend Aguia Sea School, the staff, JP, Dawn and Linda, are extremely helpful, John and Simon, the instructors that got me through my yachtmaster, short range radio course and my ocean are knowledgable, patient and passionate about their subjects. All in all a great operation, thanks guys!
Amanda’s great medical training helped me to save a life on my recent Trans Atlantic crossing! Thank you so much. A client developed a severe seasickness right after leaving Guadeloupe. Halfway across it got so bad that I found him hyperventilating with curled up fingers and toes in his cabin. Promising wild and crazy sex (apparently it gets them focused) if managing to breathe in pace with me helped. Lying is not considered a crime if it works to safe a life! Great practical hints and tricks from a wonderful person packed with experience.
