Sea Survival: Preparation and planning for survival at sea
Sea Survival Training Course
This Sea Survival course is essential for anyone who goes to sea. Hopefully you’ll never need to use the skills you learn, but we certainly want you to know what to do in the worst case scenario. Suitable for the occasional cruiser, a summer charter holiday guest or a professional mariner.
The RYA Basic Sea Survival course is referred to as a genuine ‘lifesaver’ and it’s a privilege to be an instructor for this important course. It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more likely to survive. An important part of the course is a practical session in a swimming pool. Experience first-hand the problems of entering an uncooperative life raft and assisting others while fully kitted out in wet weather gear and a lifejacket.
Course topics include:
- life rafts and the equipment they contain
- survival techniques
- the design of life jackets
- medical aspects of sea survival
- search and rescue techniques
- ‘will to survive’
This is a one day course, starting at 09:30hrs and closing by 17:00hrs. The first part of the day will be spent in the training room, covering all aspects of survival at sea and preparing for the ‘wet drill’ that will take place in the afternoon. The ‘wet drill’ takes place at a local sports centre providing the indoor heated swimming pool, as advised by the RYA to meet their stringent course requirements. Changing facilities are available.
Private RYA Basic Sea Survival courses can be arranged for a minimum of four persons.
This has been ideal for families who are setting sail on long cruising holidays.

When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Great new offices, perfect location and super helpful and knowledgeable staff!!! And Linda is always very friendly and keen to help out when she can. highly recommend this place!!!
I would highly recommend Aguia Sea School, the staff, JP, Dawn and Linda, are extremely helpful, John and Simon, the instructors that got me through my yachtmaster, short range radio course and my ocean are knowledgable, patient and passionate about their subjects. All in all a great operation, thanks guys!
Amanda’s great medical training helped me to save a life on my recent Trans Atlantic crossing! Thank you so much. A client developed a severe seasickness right after leaving Guadeloupe. Halfway across it got so bad that I found him hyperventilating with curled up fingers and toes in his cabin. Promising wild and crazy sex (apparently it gets them focused) if managing to breathe in pace with me helped. Lying is not considered a crime if it works to safe a life! Great practical hints and tricks from a wonderful person packed with experience.
