VHF/DSC Marine Radio, Short Range Certificate (SRC), An essential licence for any mariner.
VHF/DSC Marine Radio Training Course
Since the introduction of the online VHF radio course, this full one-day course is rarely in demand, however it is a course that we enjoy teaching and will happily arrange a private course for you, subject to a minimum of three persons participating in the training day.
The VHF/DSC radio course is a must for any mariner. This will be one of the few opportunities you’ll have to press the red button without sending for the coastguard!
This is a course where you can twiddle knobs to your hearts content, learning how to send distress and urgency messages, make inter-ship calls, what to say, how to say and when to say. We offer you VHF/DSC marine radio training on the latest SIMRAD, ICOM, RAYMARINE and STANDARD HORIZON radio sets, plus simulators for plenty of practice. Aigua Sea School is unique in that we provides four different sets of radio equipment, plus a DSC handheld radio, to provide you with better, and more varied training.
In order to meet CEPT resolutions the course involves ten hours of training time, 3 hours of which may be self-study (see pre-course knowledge requirements below), on completion of the training whether taken with us in the classroom or online, each candidate must be examined by an independent assessor at our premises. Assuming successful completion of the VHF/SRC exam (practical & theory) the course leads to the achievement of the Short Range Certificate which is the legal requirement for operating a marine band radio. This certificate is also required for all commercial endorsement applications and is pre-requisite for Yachtmaster examinations.
Duration: 1 day (classroom course) or 4-8 hours (online course)
Minimum age: 16
Items to bring: Passport sized photograph, credit or debit card (for licence/exam fee – payable direct to RYA)
Expected pre-course knowledge: You may collect the G31 course book from our office prior to the course or if you are unable to do this, then please read and learn the content of this download:
*Dates and timings may be subject to change at our discretion. We can arrange the dates to suit your schedule.

I would highly recommend Aguia Sea School, the staff, JP, Dawn and Linda, are extremely helpful, John and Simon, the instructors that got me through my yachtmaster, short range radio course and my ocean are knowledgable, patient and passionate about their subjects. All in all a great operation, thanks guys!
STCW Course Amanda’s great medical training helped me to save a life on my recent Trans Atlantic crossing! Thank you so much. A client developed a severe seasickness right after leaving Guadeloupe. Halfway across it got so bad that I found him hyperventilating with curled up fingers and toes in his cabin. Promising wild and…
We did a private Sea Survival course and thought is was great! really useful! Thanks Linda!
I found the Sea Survival training to be very good and interactive, both the theory and practice sessions were helpful, but the practical was the most memorable.
Sea Survival was a fantastic course! We all loved and enjoyed!! Thank you so much for putting together for us especially for the boys! We really had a great time and I hope more families will have a great practice as we did 😉
I took this training as it was required to commercially endorse my Yachtmaster Offshore (also done at Aigua). I ended up with so many valuable insights that I would recommended it to anyone. The Sea Survival course has a morning part focusing on the theory and an afternoon part which consists of practical drills in…
I attended the Basic Sea Survival course organized by Aigua Sea School in July 2016 and saying it was an extremely positive experience is an understatement. From the moment I first contacted them, they went out of their ways to find the optimal solution for me. They actually ran the course despite the fact that…
I would just like to say thank you to you and your team for looking after us. From my first point of contact, you bent over backwards to accommodate our needs, we had virtually no experience in the world of motor yachts. You advised us on what we needed to do pre course and sorted…
I have done my PB2, VHF, Day Skipper Motor and PWC Instructor with Aigua and I couldn’t be happier with all my instructors!!!! (Nathan, Sam, Trevor, Linda, Katie, Candi and Graham – thanks to you all!! You are brilliant!). The professionalism that everything is run with, from the first contact to the end of the…
The first aid on Saturday was brilliant. I have had a few courses with Amanda before whilst working on Unfurled, so knew what to expect and as always really enjoyed what she had to teach us.
Similarly the Sea Survival course was really good and you are an excellent Instructor. Both Paul and I feel more equipped to deal with an emergency situation. I particularly liked the structure of the course (morning theory then afternoon practical) and being able to look at and use all the equipment.
The First Aid was great and we both really enjoyed it. Amanda (Hewson) was excellent; she explained everything very well and answered all questions. We could have quite easily done another day to further our learning.
Sea Survival: Just a quick review on this essential day – beside the well structured course and its content, I personally think that this is one of the most essential courses any seamen should take. The theoretical part covers the parts and topics which you normally don’t expect where the practical drill prepares you for…
I would like to say thank you for the VHF exam & workshop and for your professionalism. I feel I learnt more in two evenings with you than I have in two days over here and that’s all due to the fantastic way you explain things. Thank you.
