Yachtmaster Ocean: to sail without limits, the world is your oyster!
Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence
The Yachtmaster Ocean certificate of competence is the jewel in the crown of the RYA: to be a Master of Yachts unlimited by mileage. You should apply for this course when you have achieved RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore status.
Another Aigua Special:
Train with Aigua Sea School and cover the theory elements of the tightly adhered-to syllabus before stepping onboard an Aigua training yacht and doing it for real. We added a sixth day to our Yachtmaster Ocean course so you can put your newly gained theoretical skills into practice: taking real sights at sea and making real compass checks as the yacht sails through the day. Play with the stars and moon, should the weather permit, and plot your global position, onboard, in real conditions.
We aim to make our Ocean exam candidates the finest in the Med, and we believe this course will secure that goal. Using the nautical pages for the current year and the present day you will calculate the time of the meridian for your day at sea; you will take morning sights, noon sights, afternoon sights, moon sights, star sights (the latter two weather permitting). The sextant will feel natural in your hand, the compass checks be clear and uncomplicated; the sight reduction tables not feared but your friend.
Our ocean training will make the subject come to life and you will gain so much more confidence in your new skills. Specific joining information will be accessible to you after you booked your course.
The Oral Exam
If you are working towards your Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, completion of this shorebased course exempts you from the written exam.
Please note that the day at sea is a training exercise and therefore the sights taken on this trip cannot be submitted for your exam.
´’Sights’ for an assessment must be taken independently by the exam candidate.
The Aigua Sea School team will help you prepare for the independent Ocean examination that takes the form of an interview.
You’ll need to pay the Ocean oral examination fee directly to the RYA on your exam application form as it is a separate fee. For 2019 the Ocean exam fee is £166(Click here to visit the RYA page)
Upon successful achievement of Yachtmaster Ocean status, and with your certificate commercially endorsed, you can work as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt, subject to the MCA’s codes of practice, worldwide.
The Yachtmaster Ocean certificate is also a pre-requisite for the MCA’s Chief Mate, Master 500 and Master 3000 qualifications.

Great school, courses and facilities offered with instructors who are passionate about what they are teaching and students’ learning and career progression. The extra knowledge, time and guidance that Linda gives students, particularly through her Navigation workshops is so valuable. It is no wonder why Aigua Sea School is the go to choice for Yachtmasters…
From an instructor’s point of view, Aigua offers unparalleled facilities but, more importantly, a very good support system which means we can offer great service to the students. When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Thanks for everything during the two weeks I spent with you guys. It was a lot of information to take on and was a great feeling to complete the course on Sunday afternoon. I felt well prepared for the exam and found it to be a straight forward process. The examiner was great.
Just finished a week of Yachtmaster Ocean Theory with Simon Bradshaw at Aigua, and yet again, Aigua has not failed to deliver on top quality tuition, support and smiles throughout the whole week! Fantastic school and I could not recommend them enough!
