Yachtmaster Offshore: become a Master of Yachts up to 200grt
Yachtmaster Offshore Course
This level of maritime training has become our specialty and we are the first choice of training provider for Yachtmaster candidates in Palma de Mallorca, and even around the world. Our Yachtmaster exam success rate is unequaled in the Mediterranean and the training support we offer to our students is unrivaled, including free Yachtmaster training classes to assist your preparation.
RYA/MCA ‘Yachtmaster Offshore’ is the pinnacle of the sail and motor cruising qualifications, and is a much coveted title that is held in high regard worldwide, certainly the first step for a professional career in the nautical industry.
Yachtmaster Offshore Requirements
Before booking your training, you must meet the pre-exam experience advised by the RYA. Pre-exam requirements are:
- 50 days at sea
- Five days as skipper
- 2,500 miles (half of which should be in tidal waters)
- Five passages over 60 miles including: two overnight passages and two as skipper
- Half your sea miles must be in vessels between 7m and 24m LOA*.
*Whilst some vessels, for example powerboats, meet the guidelines of over 7m LOA, this will not meet the realistic requirements of motor cruising experience for Yachtmaster motor training and exam. For the level of Yachtmaster, a candidate will require experience in the type of vessel relevant to the qualification. Please do consult the Aigua Sea School team, or the training department of the RYA, if you seek further clarification on this. Aigua Sea School can provide preparatory training, in advance of joining a Yachtmaster course, which will be of huge benefit to your boat handling and seamanship in a motor cruiser.
You should have navigation theory understanding to the level of the RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased course before you sign up for the course.
A GMDSS compliant Marine Radio Operator’s licence and a valid First Aid certificate must also be presented to your examiner, at the time of examination.
VHF/DSC Marine Radio courses are run regularly at Aigua Sea School and we can also recommend excellent First Aid course providers as part of our Yachtmaster training programme. We’ll help ensure your application is complete.
For the most up to date information regarding the experience required before signing up for Yachtmaster, please click here to be directed to the relevant RYA page. All exam candidates must hold the relevant practical and theoretical experience, provide proof of sea miles and skippering experience to the examiner.
We arrange the exam sessions to start as soon as your practical training finishes. To adhere to RYA/MCA guidelines, at least a 48-hour exam session must be allocated. Please speak with us before booking any onward travel. When the examiner steps onboard, your training team steps off and the independent exam session is underway. Aigua takes care to use different examiners, this further verifies the quality of training we provide, which results in our high exam pass rate.
The Yachtmaster Offshore Course
Our RYA qualified Yachtmaster Instructors will take you through a rigorous Yachtmaster Offshore exam preparation training schedule, ensuring you are ready for the assessment. Practical training starts on a Monday morning, start times during the week will vary to allow for night training exercises with training usually finishing on a Friday afternoon.
Feel like your theoretical knowledge isn’t quite up to scratch? Aigua Sea School offer a course two week package of specialised theory and practical training (see the Yachtmaster packages), furthermore we also invite you to attend our free-of-charge theory workshops to further help prepare for this intensive course.
The Yachtmaster Offshore Exam
The practical examinations are run by independent Yachtmaster examiners. Aigua Sea School includes the flights and travel expenses of the examiners free of charge. When your training finishes, we introduce the crew to the examiner, then your training team steps off and the exam begins. Please allow up to 48 hours for the exam session. Contact the Training Team if you need to discuss booking return flights, also please ask about our accommodation recommendations if you’re flying in for your training.
Yachtmaster Offshore candidates are expected to demonstrate your practical ability as a skipper of an offshore sailing or motor yacht, including questions on collision avoidance, navigation, pilotage, meteorology and boat handling.
Successful candidates of the Yachtmaster Offshore exam (with Commercial Endorsement) can then work as a Master of commercial vessels of up to 200gt in category 1 to 6 waters – that is up to 150 miles from a safe haven.
- You, as a crew, will provision the yacht for the exam and examiner.
- Your exam fee is to be paid directly to the RYA on your exam application form (£220 for Yachtmaster Offshore).
Aigua provides free-of-charge Yachtmaster preparation classes to assist in your revision.

Great school, courses and facilities offered with instructors who are passionate about what they are teaching and students’ learning and career progression. The extra knowledge, time and guidance that Linda gives students, particularly through her Navigation workshops is so valuable. It is no wonder why Aigua Sea School is the go to choice for Yachtmasters…
From an instructor’s point of view, Aigua offers unparalleled facilities but, more importantly, a very good support system which means we can offer great service to the students. When you couple that with their diligence and integrity you can be sure of being in safe hands.
Thanks for everything during the two weeks I spent with you guys. It was a lot of information to take on and was a great feeling to complete the course on Sunday afternoon. I felt well prepared for the exam and found it to be a straight forward process. The examiner was great.
Just finished a week of Yachtmaster Ocean Theory with Simon Bradshaw at Aigua, and yet again, Aigua has not failed to deliver on top quality tuition, support and smiles throughout the whole week! Fantastic school and I could not recommend them enough!
