Yachtmaster Navigation Theory to Coastal and Offshore Competence
Yachtmaster Navigation Theory Course
The RYA Yachtmaster Navigation Theory course is an intensive course with at least 40 hours tuition time plus a 6.5 hour exam session. Using a mixture of tuition aids, from whiteboard to TV screen and hands-on training aids, we will take you through the intensive navigation theory program.
We aim to make this training as comfortable for you as possible: our classroom is spacious, light and well ventilated with a supply of fresh drinking water for your comfort and convenience.
Specific joining information will be available in the week prior to course start. Timings may well vary during the week to ensure the course meets the tuition time set by the RYA guidelines. The closing time each day is also subject to change so we ask that you be flexible. Then, if you are ready to proceed to the Shorebased exam stage to achieve the course completion certificate, an exam invigilation session will run over a 6.5 hour session on the Saturday.
All the tools you require to participate in the course will be provided to you:
- Course book
- RYA training charts x 2
- RYA training almanac
- Yachtmaster Shorebased exercise book
- 2B pencil
You will also be provided with an access code to your own copy of the RYA Training Chart Plotter. This code is available to you in advance of the course, please enquire and we will send you your unique code. If you bring a laptop to the course it will be useful during the sections that are run using the chart plotter.
How to prepare?
We are often asked about how best a candidate can prepare for the start of their theory week … our response is always “know your basics!”. Arrive on the Monday morning knowing the basics of vessel lights, vessel day shapes, collision regulations, buoyage etc. This is the most elementary part of navigation theory and is taught at Competent Crew level.
The tuition time of 40-hours is further supported by revision of some subjects during the practical week, focusing on some of the examiner’s favourites:
- Secondary port tidal calculations
- Course to steer
- Passage planning
Please note: by attending the free of charge theory workshops in the run up to your Yachtmaster course you will benefit from an additional 4-5 hours of theory tuition.
With this in mind we also recommend apps from Safe-Skipper.com and the online Day Skipper theory course provided by Skippers Online.
